A video going viral showcases a blue vehicle parked next to a wooded area. From behind the car, a curious black bear is roaming about. Without hesitation, the bear manages to open up the driver’s side door of the car. We’re not sure where bears have learned how to open up car doors, but with how many videos are being released with shocking footage, it’s as if they’re teaching cubs in school! They simply put their long claws behind the door handle and pry it open with pure strength. One thing that makes this particular video unique is that the vehicle owner is headed out with a box full of apples. As she gets to her car, she doesn’t seem to question why the driver’s front door is already open. Instead, the woman walks as if she’s about to get in and is instantly spooked by the apex predator. Typically, brown bears avoid people and only rarely attack them when they see them. They have an unpredictable nature, though, and will attack if they feel threatened or startled. Most injuries and fatalities in North America are caused by sows with cubs.
Fight or Flight
The situation filmed here checks a few of the boxes for a bear attack. It appears to be a young cub and there’s no denying that it was surprising. You’ll notice, the woman tries to close the car door and lock the bear inside. We’re not sure what she was trying to accomplish with that move but when fight or flight kicks in, we do unusual things. She screams and apples fly everywhere as the bear leaps out of the vehicle and sprints in the other direction. Being the smart animal it is, the bear know can smell the juicy apples and is in for a treat. After taking a moment to collect himself, he moves closer to the woman’s front door and sniffs out an afternoon snack. The smell of something in her car, even a pack of gum, could be the reason why the furry four-legged creature got in there in the first place. Bears have an incredible sense of smell and he simply could’ve been looking for an easy meal. We’re just thankful, the vehicle owner wasn’t on the menu! A hilarious comment on the video reads, “He has been taking lessons from Yogi, he’s is definitely smarter than the average bear.” We couldn’t have said it better!
