In this alarming footage shot in Wyoming, we see a grizzly emerge from a forest and take an interest in some horse riders. They were just about to head off on foot and leave the horses when a bear approached around 10 yards away. Once the riders are back on their horses, the bear continues to circle at about 15 yards away before leaving. At one point you can hear the horse rider say “don’t shoot.” Grizzlies are considered big game animals in the US but there are laws to protect them and they are considered to be a threatened species.

Keeping Safe Around Grizzly Bears

Grizzly bears are omnivores so they eat a combination of plants (berries, roots and mushrooms) as well as some meat (insects, mice, deer) and they scoop out fish from rivers. They are big eaters and need a lot of food to keep them going. It is not unusual to see a grizzly close to human settlements, searching through trash cans for a meal. Also, we humans like to explore the habitats where grizzlies live. Therefore, it is inevitable that many humans are going to come face-to-face with a grizzly – just like the one in this vid. So, what should you do if this happens to you? The advice from the US Fish and Wildlife Service is that you should not approach the bear and stay at least 300 feet away. Don’t leave food out that could attract the bears to come close to you – use bear-resistant boxes. If you avoid hiking at dusk, dawn and night you are less likely to encounter a bear. In the unlikely event that a bear approaches you, do not run – they can reach speeds of 30 mph and you will not outrun them! Instead, always carry a bear spray and use it if you have to.
