The video begins with the group of people yelling and screaming, trying to scare the bear away. Multiple people make as much noise as they can, waving walking poles and moving around to appear larger. The bear doesn’t express much interest, simply watching them from a stationary position. It’s unclear from the video if the bear has a clear path up to the group. He is walking along a dirt path, but there are shrubs and some elevation between him and the hikers. It is likely that there are at least one or two switchbacks between the bear and the people. “Back away slowly,” one woman yells to the group. The bear takes a small step toward them, still not charging or acting aggressively. It is a giant grizzly bear, however, and even that tiny movement is met with some expletives from the woman shooting the footage.

Continuing Their Hike

The bear continues to walk at a leisurely pace and the people decide that they’ll give him the territory. After all, it is his home and they are just tourists. “Oh, he doesn’t care,” says the woman with the camera as the others turn to walk away. “Come on guys.” The other hikers follow the advice of the other woman, backing away from the bear who is now walking toward them on the path. “Don’t make eye contact,” she tells them. As they continue on their hike, putting the bear behind them, their nerves must be on edge, just hoping that the bear will lose interest in their group. Grizzly bears are found in parts of North America, including many National Parks. While it is always important to follow guidelines regarding protected areas, hikers should know that they can come across wildlife like grizzlies at just about any part of the park.
