A group of people was enjoying a day in the pool like any other when something surprising was in the water. ViralHog, a popular animal Youtube channel, uploaded a video that has surpassed nearly 300,000 likes. People in the pool turn around to see a large iguana swimming toward them at full speed. The green iguana is the longest species of iguana. From snout to tail, it may reach lengths of 5 to 7 feet. You can spot these critters by the black rings around the back half of their bodies.  The vacationers in the pool instantly start swimming to get back on the concrete. The iguana picks up speed as one man struggles to get out. Both the iguana and the man make it out at the same time, heading out in separate directions.  One comment under the video states, “What is so funny is to see the one-pound iguana emerge triumphantly from the water after having scared the living daylights out of a 6 foot, 250-pound guy!” Here’s the thing: Full-grown adult green iguanas like the one in this video can reach up to nearly 20 pounds.  They are naturally good swimmers. The typical iguana could be a stronger swimmer than most humans, in all likelihood. Even yet, these lizards may submerge themselves for up to an hour. Iguanas in the wild frequently swim away from dangers to their environment.  Green iguanas prefer trees near bodies of water because they can leap into the pool and swim away when they’re in danger. They spend the majority of their lives hanging out on trees. Natural swimming habitats for iguanas include both fresh and saltwater. Despite the fact that many people swim in chlorinated pools, like the one in this video, it is not the greatest choice for them. What do you think you’d do if you saw a huge lizard swimming towards you at full speed? While it appears to be swimming super fast, it turns out green iguanas swim on average 1.5 feet per second, which is on par with humans. The fastest iguana on record swam at double the speed! Watch out for that guy!
